Marina Atlântica
(Conversion of the Old Commercial Dock)
The future Atlantic Marina must be added to the Downstream and Upstream Docks. This is the former commercial dock, 477 metres long, 100 metres wide maximum and 45 metres wide minimum. It is bounded by a vertical quay wall with a perimeter of 1,055 metres, which delimits a wet area of 34,000 m2 and a depth of -4.00 metres ZH. Access to this dock is via the lock channel, which is 125 metres long and has a depth of -4.00 metres at 0 ZH.
Next to this dock is the Engenheiro Duarte Pacheco Dry Dock. This dock is 103 metres long and 15 metres wide, its mouth is 12 metres wide and its sill is -2.70 metres to the ZH. After its conversion, this dry dock will be an important support unit for vessels wishing to make repairs during their stay or stopover in the port of Viana do Castelo.
This dock is home to the hospital ship Gil Eanes, which until the 1970s was a support ship for the cod fishing fleet in the Newfoundland seas. It is currently a museum ship and a Youth Hostel has been installed inside.
